AutoSync

Q: How does Memeo AutoSync work?

A: With Memeo AutoSync, a user “pairs” two folders on a PC, laptop, USB flash drive, portable hard drive, iPod, NAS, or some other device. All the files and subfolders in those two folders are copied to the other folder. For example, in the case where you have five files in folder A and none in folder B, the five files in folder A are copied to folder B. In the case where you have five files in folder A and six in folder B, five files will be copied from folder A to folder B and six files will be copied from folder B to folder A leaving eleven identical files in each folder. During a first-time sync, files with newer timestamps will override older files. With subsequent syncs, Memeo AutoSync will automatically keep track of file changes and copy those new or modified files to the other folder. During subsequent syncs, Memeo AutoSync will override a file *only* if it is safe. Memeo AutoSync will consider a sync to be unsafe if a file has been modified on both locations since the last sync. In such cases, AutoSync will make a copy of the file using a different name.

Q: How do you expect people to use Memeo AutoSync?

A: Our small business customers will use Memeo AutoSync to ensure they always have their latest business files with them. For example, a business user would create a sync plan to copy their latest files from their work PC to a USB flash drive. Before they leave the office, they plug in their USB flash drive and automatically copy their most recent work files to the USB flash drive (only new or modified files are copied). When they get home, they plug their USB flash drive into their home PC and the latest files are copied to their home PC (where they have a separate sync plan set up to sync files from the USB flash drive to their home PC). As they make changes to the files on their home PC, those changes are automatically copied back to the USB flash drive (allowing our users to synchronize their files back to the work PC when they return to the office).
For our customers with lots of digital photos and music across several PCs in their home, Memeo AutoSync will allow them to consistently synchronize music and photos across their home PCs. Our users set up a sync plan between two folders on two separate PCs connected via a home LAN. During the initial sync, files are copied in both directions to create a consolidated library of music on both PCs. When new music is downloaded to either PC, the songs are immediately copied to the other folder to ensure that a users music library is constantly kept in sync across their home PCs.

Q: What is a sync plan?

A: A "Sync Plan" contains a set of rules that determine how a pair of folders will be synchronized. When you create a sync plan, you specify where the two folders are located (e.g., a folder on your computer and a folder on a USB flash drive). Memeo AutoSync will then synchronize the contents of one folder with the contents of the other folder.

Q: How do I create a sync plan?

A: To create a sync plan:

  • Click the “Create Sync Plan” option on the left side of the Memeo AutoSync main application window.
  • When the Welcome screen appears, click “Next” to continue.
  • On the Select a Pair of Folders screen, specify the pair of folders (e.g., a folder on your PC and a folder on your USB flash drive) that
  • Memeo AutoSync will synchronize. Use the “Browse” button/s to quickly locate the folders.
  • Click “Next” to continue. Memeo AutoSync will scan the folders.
  • On the Confirm Selections screen, you will see each folder's number of files as well as size. To change a folder, click “Back”.
  • To confirm the folders, click “Next”.
  • In the Enter Sync Plan Name text box, enter a unique name or description that identifies the sync plan, and then click “Next”.
  • When the Memeo AutoSync Configuration Wizard notifies you that your sync plan was successfully set up, click “Done”.

Q: What destinations can I sync between?

A: Memeo AutoSync lets you synchronize between the folders on your computers either directly over a LAN or remotely using removable storage devices such as a USB keychain drives, portable hard drives, network drives, iPods, and more.

Q: How do I tell my system to sync files when I have created a new file or modified an existing one?

A: Memeo AutoSync works automatically. The software tracks new or modified files and will immediately sync them to the other folder when the changes are made. There is no need for manual or scheduled syncing.

  • Q: What happens if one of my sync folders is not available (e.g., my USB flash drive is not plugged in) and I make a change to a file that is in my sync plan?

A: Memeo AutoSync keeps track of all the files that have changed or been created that match your sync plan. And, whenever you insert your device or reconnect to your network folder, new and updated fields are automatically copied both directions.

  • Q: How do you handle potential sync conflicts (same file modified separately in two different locations)?

A: Memeo AutoSync will override a file *only* if it is safe. Memeo AutoSync will consider a sync to be unsafe if a file has been modified on both locations since the last sync. In such cases, AutoSync will make a copy of the file using a different name.

For example, if file FileA is a conflicted file, Memeo AutoSync will rename the older FileA to be “FileA (1)”. The number between the parentheses will be incremented if there is already a file called “FileA (1)”. You will then need to manually resolve this situation by manually merging the two files, deleting the duplicate, and syncing again.

  • Q: How do you handle renames and deletes?

A: Renames and deletes of folders and documents on either side are repeated on the other. If you delete a file in folder A, it will be deleted in folder B. If you rename a file in folder B, it will be renamed in folder A.

Q: What files are excluded in sync plan?

By default, AutoSync excludes system, temporary and hidden files and directories.

Q: Can I choose what files to include or exclude in my sync plan?

A: In this version of AutoSync, custom rules are not supported.

Q: Can I set up multiple sync plans?

A: You can create as many sync plans as you like. For example, you can set up a sync plan to synchronize your work files between a work PC and a USB flash drive so you can always have your latest work files with you. Or, you can create a sync plan that synchronizes the latest music across your PCs on your home LAN. You can also set up another sync plan to make sure your favorite photos are always updated on your computer.

Q: Why are counters on AutoSync different than counters in folders’ properties?

A: Memeo AutoSync doesn’t count hidden files that are used by the folders on a computer.

Q: What are the system requirements for AutoSync?

  • You can install Memeo AutoSync on a computer running the following operating systems:
  • Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional Edition, Windows Vista (32bit / 64bit)
  • The following are also recommended:
  • 1GHz Intel P3 processor or equivalent
  • 512MB RAM
  • 20MG free disk space
  • AutoSync 2.5 requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. (If you don't have it on your system, Memeo AutoSync will install it for you.)
  • Required software for .NET 2.0:
  • Windows Installer 3.0. Windows Installer 3.1 or later is recommended.
  • IE 5.01 or later: You must also be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later for all installations of the .NET Framework.
  • Disk Space Requirements for .NET 2.0: 280 MB (x86), 610 MB (x64)

Q: Do I need Administrator privilege to install and run AutoSync?

A: You must have Administrator privileges on the computer on which you are installing Memeo AutoSync. Only user accounts with Administrator privileges can use Memeo AutoSync.

Send

Q: What is Memeo Send?

A: Memeo Send is a new file delivery service from Memeo and was designed from the ground up for secure, assured delivery of files and folders to anyone on the Internet.

Q: Does Memeo Send limit the size of file or folders I can send?

A: There is no FILE size limit with Memeo Send. We have seen customers successfully send individual files over 4 GB.

NOTE - There is, however, a limit of 2 GB of files within FOLDERS. Due to a technical limitation, the SUM of all files within a folder needs to be less than 2 GB. If you need to send a Folder of files greater than 2 GB, we suggest splitting them up into multiple Folders of less than 2 GB each.

Q: What types of files does Memeo Send support?

A: Any type of file can be sent using Memeo Send.

Q: Can I send files internationally?

A: Yes. There are no restrictions. Anyone on the Internet with an email address can receive your package of files.

Q: Can I view the status of my packages and files I've sent?

A: Absolutely. You can do this two ways.- From the Memeo Send desktop application or you can go to http://me.memeo.com and log in using your Memeo account credentials (the same login you used to send the original package).

Either way, you can click the Track tab to see all the packages you've sent and the status for each. "Pending Download" means the Recipient has not yet downloaded your files. "Delivered" means the Recipient has successfully downloaded your files.

Q: Can I download files sent to me more than 1 time?

A: Yes. As long as the package is still available for downloading, it can be downloaded multiple times. This is particularly useful when you need to download files at home and the office.

Q: How long will files stay available for download?

A: Memeo's policy allows for recipients to re-download files for up to 14 days.

Q: Can I access my received files from multiple computers?

A: Yes. This can be particularly handy if you need files on both your home and the office computers.

Q: Do I have to commit to a monthly subscription to use Memeo Send?

Not at all. The Memeo Send service is pay as you go. If you don't use it, you pay nothing. You are only charged when sending.

Q: Can I try out Memeo Send before paying anything?

A: Sure. Simply download the desktop software (Mac or Windows) and create an account. Get the Memeo Send software here:

http://www.memeo.com/business/send

When you create an account and send your first package of files, you will be given a limited number of Free introductory delivery Credits to use as you wish. This allows you send a package and throughouly evaluate the Memeo Send service before committing any money.

Q: Is there a trial period with Memeo Send?

A: There is no time bomb in the software or limitation to the Memeo Send service when you are evaluating it. You simply use the product as you would normally. Once you have used up your initial free Delivery Credits for evaluation, you will need to purchase more in order to continue using the service.

Q: What is a “Delivery Credit” and how is it used?

A: Delivery Credits can be thought of like a book of postage stamps. You need at least one Credit to send a package of files. More than 1 may be needed depending on the size of your package and number of recipients.

Q: How do I purchase more Delivery Credits?

A: The simplest and smoothest way is by using the Memeo Send desktop software for Windows or Mac. From the Memeo Send application use the menus to check your Account Status and click the Buy More button. You will then be walked through the purchase process.

You can also puchase more Credits directly from our eStore:
http://store.esellerate.net/store/checkout/CustomLayout.aspx?s=STR0484346868

NOTE - Be sure to include the email address of the intended account to be credited.

For more information you can go to the Memeo Send product page at
http://www.memeo.com/business/send/

Q: Do my friends need to install desktop software to receive my package?

A: No. Recipients can use any standard web browser to securely download your package of files.

Q: Can I send the same package of files to more than one Recipient?

A: Absolutely. Simply enter each person's email address in the "Send To:" field.

Q: How does Memeo Send work?

A: Memeo Send includes Internet services and a desktop application (Mac or Windows) to create and deliver packages of files from a Sender to one or more Recipients. A package of files may include any type of file or any number of files or folders of files.

  • Using the Memeo Send desktop application, senders select files or folders of files for delivery. Files may be selected using drag and drop or pick and choose techniques.
  • Folder structures are preserved using industry standard archiving technologies (zip). Folders are delivered as zip files.
  • Using the desktop application, senders address these packages of files to one or more recipients.
  • Recipient addresses are entered using individual email addresses, which can by typed in manually or selected from Outlook Contacts.
  • The sender then enters a general description, which is included in the tracking information and the email notification to the recipient. This helps the recipient identify the delivery.
  • Once everything is ready for uploading, a manifest of files is created by the desktop application to assure all files are accounted for on the recipient end.
  • The sender’s files and manifest are then uploaded to Memeo's secure servers using SSL encrypted connections for delivery.
  • The intended recipients are automatically notified via email when a package is ready for downloading.
o In addition to the email notification, recipients already running the Memeo Send desktop software will receive a pop-up alert of the new delivery.
  • From the email notification, the recipient can choose to download via web browser or to download using the Memeo Send desktop application.
  • New recipients may choose to download using a web browser, as it requires no software installation.
    • When the user clicks this option in the email,
      • a web browser is started and
      • the user is automatically logged in and taken to their private download web page on me.memeo.com.
    • Users do not need to manually create an account to use the web browser option. Individuals are identified by unique codes embedded within their email notification.
  • Recipients with unreliable network connections where large files require extra downloading time may prefer to download using the Memeo Send desktop application.
  • The Memeo Send desktop application provides for a more robust download process than a web browser. Downloads will automatically restart from where they left off in case of network or PC interruptions, such as weak Wi-Fi connections or laptops going to sleep.

    • After downloading and installing the desktop application, the user will be automatically logged in and taken to the application’s download screen.
    • A pop-up alert signals when the download is complete.
    • When using the Memeo Send desktop application, all files in the manifest are downloaded automatically, whereas when using the web browser option, files must be downloaded individually.
  • For both web browser and desktop application, all files are downloaded using SSL encrypted connections to assure they are delivered securely.
  • Upon completion of the download, the original sender is notified via email that the files have been successfully delivered. This email confirmation (return receipt) includes date and time of download by the recipient.

Q: Do I have to manually create a login account in order to use Memeo Send?

A: Not necessarily. To send, you will need to have a Memeo account and log in to the Memeo Send service using the Mac or Windows desktop software. This assures the package is being sent by you. Recipients who download via the Web have accounts created dynamically and are are automatically logged in and taken to their specific download area where the files can then be clicked on and downloaded. Likewise, if a recipient chooses to download your package using the Memeo Send software, the first time they use the desktop software, they will be automatically logged in so they can download your files with minimal hassle.

Q: What are the system requirements?

A: You will need an Internet connection to use the Memeo Send service. To upload files, you will need to install the desktop application. Supported desktops include Windows XP, Vista (32-bit and 64-bit versions) and Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit versions). For Mac Users: Mac OS X 10.5 or newer. Downloading can be done using the Memeo Send desktop application or the latest versions of any of the popular web browsers (IE, Firefox and Safari).

Note - Memeo recommends using IE 7 or newer, as some Web pages may not display properly with older versions.

Q: Are there any networking requirements? Can I use my DSL line from home?

A: There are no networking requirements to use Memeo Send, however a faster network with more bandwidth will allow for faster uploading and downloading.

Q: What if I lose my Wi-Fi connection, my computer crashes or my laptop goes to sleep while uploading?

A: Don't worry. The Memeo Send desktop application is smart at uploading and downloading and will pick up from where it left off once your network connection becomes available, so you won't have to start all over again.

Q: How do I know if my file has successfully been received?

A: There are a couple of ways. You can use the Tracking Screen within Memeo Send desktop application to check the status of the delivery. You will also receive an email notification when the recipient completes the download.

Q: Can I send files from Windows to Mac and vice versa?

A: Yes. Although some applications or data files may not run. Memeo Send does not translate data in any way. (think of Memeo Send as a thumb drive for long distances)
