Memeo
AutoSync User Guide
About Memeo AutoSync
Memeo AutoSync
lets you synchronize between the folders on your computers, USB
keychain drives, hard disks, network drives, and more. Whenever you
insert your device or reconnect to your network folder, new and
updated fields are automatically copied both directions. Renames and
deletes of folders and documents on either side are repeated on the
other, meaning you don’t have to worry about which folders are
missing certain files. The entire sync process is automatically
bidirectional and symmetrical.
It doesn’t matter where your
computers are at—Memeo
AutoSync lets you
quickly and easily synchronize your selected files, including the
exact number of files and subfolders as well as the content of those
files. For example, let’s say at the end of the workday, you want to
continue working at home on your desktop computer. With
Memeo AutoSync,
you can simply plug in a memory device and sync it with the desired
work files. Then, when you return home insert that memory device
into your home computer and automatically access the latest work
files. The next time you return to work, insert the memory device
into your office computer and sync up the files. You’ll immediately
have all the files you worked at home right on your desktop at work.
About Sync Plans
A "Sync Plan" contains a set of
rules that determine how a pair of folders will be synchronized.
When you create a sync plan, you specify where these two sets of
folders are located (preferably a folder on your computer and a
folder on a destination).
Memeo AutoSync
will then synchronize
the contents of one with the contents of the other.
Once you use
the simple 3-step AutoSync Configuration Wizard to create a sync
plan, everything is automatically done for you. As long as a memory
device (USB key, iPOd, external hard disk, network) is plugged into
your machine,
Memeo AutoSync
will continuously synchronize data. After your sync plan is
configured in
Memeo AutoSync,
just plug in the memory device (for example, into a computer at home
or at work), and
Memeo AutoSync
will automatically synchronize all the designated files on both
sides (storing the latest on either side). It’s entirely automatic,
and the folder will be an exact duplicate of each other after the
sync process is finished.
Create as many
sync plans as you like. For example, set up a plan to synchronize
your work contents on a USB key or iPod that will let you
continually keep all the latest files on multiple work places. Or,
create a sync plan that synchronizes the latest music on your laptop
computer with your media storage at home. Set up another one to make
sure your favorite photos (of your family, for example) are always
updated on your computer.
Things you should know
Before you begin to use
Memeo AutoSync to
synchronize your files, there are some important things to keep in
mind.
-
A first-time
(initial) sync is when a sync plan is run for the very first
time. With subsequent syncs,
Memeo AutoSync will automatically know if a file as
been modified or deleted from one side or the other. This means
that if after the first sync was processed, if you delete a file
from Folder A, Memeo AutoSync
will in the subsequent sync delete that same file
from Folder B.
-
During
first-time syncs, files with newer timestamps will override
older files. On subsequent syncs,
Memeo AutoSync will
override a file *only* if it is safe.
Memeo AutoSync will
consider a sync to be unsafe if a file has been modified on both
locations since the last sync. In such cases, AutoSync will make
a copy of the file using a different name. For example, if file
FileA is a conflicted file,
Memeo AutoSync will rename the older FileA to be
“FileA (1)”. The number between the parentheses will be
incremented if there is already a file called “FileA (1)”. You
will then need to manually resolve this situation by manually
merging the two files, deleting the duplicate, and syncing
again.
-
There will be
times when Memeo AutoSync
encounters a conflict resolution. A conflict is when
Memeo AutoSync
determines that copying over a file is somehow "dangerous." For
example, if a files has been modified on both sides before
syncing, Memeo AutoSync
will rename the older file to "filename (n)", where n is the
next available number to make the filename unique in the
directory. This way, you will never be in any danger of losing a
file that you have modified elsewhere.
-
Memeo AutoSync
will not sync hidden, system and temp directories and files.
Also, this version of Memeo
AutoSync does not support syncing a subset of files
via filtering or other means. So, if Folder A has five files and
Folder B has ten files, Memeo
AutoSync will create all ten files in both locations

Sync Scenarios
The following are some of the ways
you can utilize Memeo AutoSync. The ease-of-use and flexibility of
the application enables you to easily synchronize files on your PC
with multiple destinations.
Syncing
your PC to an iPod:
- Before
you can create and run sync plans, you must insert your iPod and
keep it plugged into your computer for the sync process to complete
successfully.
- You
will need to associate the iPod with the same drive letters. For
example, if an iPod was associated with the D:\drive when the sync
plan was created, the next time the iPod is connected, it will need
to be on the same D:\ drive in order for syncing to occur.
- As
long as your iPod is connected to the drive, syncing will happen
automatically and continuously.
- Full
syncs will initiate during any of the following: when the Memeo
AutoSync application starts; whenever the iPod is reconnected; when
the sync plan is first created; and when the user selects the
Verify Sync option from within the application.
Syncing
your PC to a USB key or USB drive:
-
Before you can create and run sync plans, you must insert your USB
key (or drive) and keep it plugged into your computer for the sync
process to complete successfully.
- You
will need to associate the USB key (or drive) with the same drive
letters. For example, if it was associated with the D:\drive when
the sync plan was created, the next time the USB key (or drive) is
connected, it will need to be on the same D:\ drive in order for
syncing to occur.
- As long as
your USB key (or drive) is connected to the drive, syncing will
happen automatically and continuously.
- Full syncs
will initiate during any of the following: when the Memeo AutoSync
application starts; whenever the USB key (or drive) is reconnected;
when the sync plan is first created; and when the user selects the
Verify Sync option from within the application.
Syncing
folders within your PC:
- You can set
up sync plans to synchronize two designated folders on your
computer. Note that you can create as many sync plans as you want.
- Syncing
occurs automatically and continuously.
- Full syncs
will initiate during any of the following: when the Memeo AutoSync
application starts; when the sync plan is first created; and when
the user selects the Verify Sync option from within the
application.
Syncing your PC to another PC
on the network:
- You can set
up sync plans to synchronize two designated computers on the
network. Note that you can create as many sync plans as you want.
- To
synchronize two different computers, you should following the
recommended guidelines for BOTH of the computers:
o
install a copy of Memeo AutoSync
o
enable file sharing
o
share the folder you want to sync
o
set the permission on the shared folder to ‘readable and writable’
by the other computer
o
create a
sync plan and designate the two shared folders that will sync
- As long as
the shared folder is reachable on the network, syncing will happen
automatically and continuously.
- Full syncs
will initiate during any of the following: when the Memeo AutoSync
application starts; when the sync plan is first created; and when
the user selects the Verify Sync option from within the
application.
Syncing your PC to a shared
folder on the network:
- You can set
up a sync plan to synchronize a folder on your computer with a
shared folder on the network. For example, NAS (network attached
storage), file servers, shared folders on another computer on the
network, etc.
- Create as
many sync plans as you want.
- Note that
in the current Memeo AutoSync version, changes on the network side
will not be automatically synced to the computer; however, changes
on the computer will be automatically synced with the network.
- You can use
the Verify Sync option from within the application to
occasionally pull changes on the network. Depending on the network
speed and the number of items in the sync plan, this feature can
take some time to complete.
- Fully syncs
will initiate during any of the following: when the Memeo AutoSync
applications starts; when the sync plan is first created; and when
the user selects the Verify Sync option from within the
application.
Syncing your PC to an online storage provider:
The current version of Memeo AutoSync does not support syncing with
an online storage provider. For example, the application does not
support syncing to FTP, Swapdrive, etc.
Creating a sync plan
The
Memeo AutoSync
Configuration Wizard walks
you through the steps of identifying a sync destination, confirming
selections, and providing a sync plan name.
There are three main steps
associated with creating a sync plan are 1) identifying a sync
destination, 2) confirming selections, and 3) providing a sync plan
name.
-
To create a
sync plan, click the
Create
Sync Plan
option on the left side of
the
Memeo
AutoSync main
application window. OR, right-click your mouse on the
Memeo
AutoSync icon in
your system tray, and click the Create Sync Plan option.
-
When the
Welcome screen appears, click Next to continue.
-
On the
Select a Destination screen, specify the pair of folders
(preferably on on your My Computer and one on a Destination
device) that
Memeo
AutoSync will
synchronize. Use the Browse button/s to quickly locate
the folders. Note: Make sure that you insert a removable
device or connect to the network if you want to sync a folder on
that location. This should be done before specifying the file.
-
Click Next to continue.
Memeo
AutoSync will scan the folders.
-
On the
Confirm Selections screen, you will see each folder's number of
files as well as size. To change a folder, click Back. To
confirm the folders, click Next.
-
In the
Enter Sync Plan Name text box, enter a unique name or
description that identifies the sync plan, and then click
Next.
-
When the
Memeo AutoSync
Configuration Wizard notifies you that your sync plan was
successfully set up, click Done.
Note that you only have to create
an initial sync plan once—Memeo
AutoSync will
automatically synchronize the pair of folders every time files are
added or changed. A pop-up message will display in the bottom left
corner notifying you when syncs are completed.
Viewing syncs in progress
You easily watch your syncs in
progress. Simply open the Memeo
AutoSync application, and then, as necessary, scroll the
list of sync plans so that the one you want to view is on the
screen.
If files are currently being
synchronized, you will see the filenames quickly appear between the
sync plan's computer icon and destination icon.
Note: Even when the
Memeo AutoSync application
is not open, a pop-up message will appear briefly every time a
folder is synchronized. To disable these pop-ups, click on the
Options menu on the main application screen and click Disable
Desktop Alerts. You can also turn Desktop Alerts off by clicking
the Close box (X) in any pop-up message.
Verifying syncs
During the verification process,
Memeo AutoSync will perform a "Sync Now" operation
on each sync plan. This feature is especially useful for network
storage users who may need to verify syncs, for example, when they
are disconnected and somebody manually makes changes to that
folder.
To verify a sync, locate the main
Memeo AutoSync application window, and click the
Verify Syncs option from the Actions menu.
Pausing sync plans
There may be times when you want
to pause sync plans for a period of time. For instance, you may not
want to synchronize a folder until you're finished working on all
the files.
To pause a sync plan, right-click
your mouse on the Memeo AutoSync
icon in your system tray
and then click Pause Sync Jobs, or on the left side of the
main application window, click Pause All Syncs.
When you pause the sync plan/s,
Memeo AutoSync saves a
list of all the files that have been added/changed/deleted and will
synchronize them when you resume by clicking Resume All Syncs
on the main application window or right-clicking the
Memeo AutoSync icon in your
system tray and clicking (un-checking) Pause Sync Jobs.
Note: If you have more
than one sync plan, you must pause them all.
Deleting sync plans
To delete a sync plan, on the
Memeo AutoSync main
application window, click in the white space for the sync plan you
want to delete, and then click Remove Sync Plan. A pop-up
dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the deletion.
When you remove a sync plan,
Memeo AutoSync will not
perform that particular sync anymore; all history regarding the two
folders have been synced will be erased. However, the synced files
will still remain intact. This lets you in the future have the
ability to create the same sync plan to synchronize the same two
directories again. In that case, however, the two folders will be
synced as if they were synced for the first time, meaning the files
with the latest revision will override the older files while the
missing files will be copied to the other side.
Getting Product Updates
Be sure to check back often for
product updates.
Memeo AutoSync
checks for updates automatically whenever you reboot your computer,
as long as you are connected to the Internet and will notify you via
a pop-up window when updates are available. Or, you can also visit
