How can I buy Memeo AutoBackup?
Download Memeo AutoBackup using any of the download buttons you see on our site (www.memeo.com). After installing Memeo AutoBackup and setting up your first backup job, you will see a red 30-day free trial notification on the left side of the Memeo AutoBackup window. Click that notification and you will be put into our quick purchase process where you enter your credit card information. At the completion of that process, Memeo AutoBackup will be automatically registered.
Note: After you click the red 30-day free trial notification, sometimes Memeo AutoBackup will say it is having trouble connecting to "eSellerate," which is the company that handles our payment processing. Usually this is caused by Internet firewall software you have loaded on your PC. If you disable that just for the short time needed to complete the process, this usually takes care of the problem!

How does AutoBackup consume system resources?
After the initial backup, Memeo AutoBackup utilizes very little system resources, if any. Memeo AutoBackup will “wake up” whenever an event is prompted (i.e., somebody plugs in a device, saves a file, deletes a file, adds files, reconnects to a network) to determine if any work needs to be done. If so, upon completion of that task, Memeo AutoBackup will return to sleep mode.
However, with the initial backup, CPU usage will be higher as Memeo AutoBackup scans for selected file types and folders, backs up pending files, and verifies them simultaneously. Additionally, if you have the main AutoBackup window open, Memeo AutoBackup tries to back up files as fast as it can, causing the CPU usage to be temporarily higher. Note: This also applies to whenever you perform upgrades because Memeo AutoBackup needs to verify your backups (only the backup changes or new files).
This rescan and re-verify will only be necessary when you shut down Memeo Autobackup manually through the Exit feature. To ensure a complete backup of your important files, the next time Memeo Autobackup wakes up it will need to rescan the entire system to index what has been changed.
When you close the Memeo AutoBackup main window and operate in Background mode (in Background mode, you will see only the AutoBackup icon in the taskbar tray), Memeo AutoBackup throttles the backup rate down. As a result, you will notice much lower CPU usage, freeing up resources to run your other applications. However, once AutoBackup detects that there has been no user input (keyboard or mouse) for one minute, it reverts back to performing full-speed backups (if there is anything to back up) until user input is detected again.

Best use of Auto Delete
The AutoDeletion feature was designed to run in the Off mode to protect from accidental deletions. You need only to switch to ON once in a while to purge deleted files on backup destination(s), or in many cases, after a system clean-up. Afterwards, be sure to toggle back to Off mode.

Why don't I see my USB external hard drive listed as a USB destination?
Try checking under "Hard Drives" destination. Although your external hard drive may be connected via USB, in most cases it will be listed in the "Hard Drives" destination selection.

What is the best backup destination?
That is a great question, and the answer is, "It depends!"
Memeo AutoBackup allows you to start quickly with minimal or no investment, turning your available storage devices into a backup system. Memeo AutoBackup's flexibility allows you to use different backup destinations as your needs grow and change.
Here are some things to consider when choosing a backup destination:
- How much data are you backing up? Can your backup destination hold all the files you want to back up? The SmartPicksTM feature in Memeo AutoBackup can help you decide what files are important to you and how much space you need.
- How much storage space do you already have? If you've got tons of space on internal or external hard drives, or on removable storage devices, then of course you should use them! If you don't have any of the above, Memeo Internet Disk allows you to protect your data immediately for as little as $2.95 a month.
- Are the files vitally important to you, either for financial or sentimental reasons? Any backup destination will help protect you against data loss. But, some files need extra protection. It's probably best to back them up away from your computer, so that if there is a computer failure or catastrophe (such as a fire) at your location, the files are preserved off-site. A removable storage device with "flash" memory (such as a USB keychain drive) has the advantage of having no moving parts (and is therefore less prone to malfunction), but a keychain drive is so small you could lose it, and you probably won't consistently store it off-site. Memeo Internet Disk is a great option for off-site, secure storage. With Memeo AutoBackup, you can back up an important file in more than one location, for peace of mind.
- Do you need to access the documents when you're away from your desk? If so, you probably shouldn't back up only to a hard disk connected to your computer. Memeo Internet Disk is a great way to have access to your files from anywhere you're connected to the Internet. You could also choose a Network Place if you have access to it from the road. Or, you could use a removable storage device that you can tuck into your briefcase. Just remember to choose the "Accessible" option when you configure your backup destination, so that the files are not encrypted.
- Do you need to keep the files private? Financial information, sensitive documents, mission-critical strategic documents for your business, all probably need to be kept secure. You could use almost any back-up destination, and choose the "Secure" option. Remember that the backups don't need to be any more or less secure than the original files on your computer!
- How fast do you need the backup and restore process to be?
After the initial backup, you will rarely have huge amounts of data to be backed up, but occasionally you might add large numbers of digital photos or other files to your computer. If you have a very slow Internet connection, you should take that into consideration before choosing an off-site backup destination.
Why should I use multiple destinations?
Memeo AutoBackup allows you to make best use of available resources, storing files according to their value and purpose.
This approach is similar to the way you would you would do for your belongings: valuable items in a safety deposit box; photo albums, books, and CDs on bookshelves; and rarely-used stuff in boxes in your garage or attic.
With Memeo AutoBackup, you can back up your files to the places they make the most sense for you. For example, you might decide to to back up frequently-updated documents to a folder on another computer on your network, home-office files to a removable storage device you can take with you, and valuable documents and cherished digital photos to a server on the Internet.
Traditional backup programs take the "big box in the garage" approach. Our product better reflects the real world where different things are stored according to their value and usage.

Can I store my files online?

What happens if I delete a file that has been backed up?
If you delete a file that has been backed up, the backup of the file is marked as delete-able. Memeo AutoBackup deletes those files whenever it needs more space in the backup destination.
